Are Hormones Wrecking Havoc on your Finances?

Okay ladies. Let’s talk hormones. We all have them. And if you are 25 or older, you already have lived through a shift here and there thus far. You know what I am talking about. Feeling a little edgy some days? Emotional? Maybe even crazy? Men snicker jokes about “It must be that time of month,” but unfortunately, it’s true. We ARE hormonal creatures.

I could get into how the hypothalamus is responsible for triggering the release of progesterone and estrogen and the balance directly effects neurotransmitters such as GABA, serotonin and dopamine. But I will spare you the medical jargon to let you ponder on this one fact: Hormones have an affect your mood, thoughts and energy levels.

Whether it be irregular periods, bad PMS, postpartum depression, pregnant, breastfeeding, hormonal acne, PCOS etc…we all can agree that hormones play a huge role on how we as women feel.

So what does hormones have to do with finances?

  • Do you ever find yourself trying so hard to stick to a budget but can’t seem to keep anything in order?
  • You want to cook from scratch but don’t have the energy or motivation?
  • Do you desire to be debt free but you are too depressed to care about anything?
  • Do you impulse spend now but shopping was never an issue in the past?
  • Does budgeting make you anxious?
  • Do you go shopping with a list and come out with nothing on that list and not sure how it happened?
  • Do you feel like you have been running around all day putting out fires only to find yourself totally consumed?
  • Do you keep forgetting to send out bills on time?

There are so many factors that can affect your decision making but if you have the desire to be debt free but your brain is too foggy to even process how to go about doing it, you may have a hormonal imbalance that is causing it. It has taken me far too long to connect my moods, irregular periods and my lack of motivation to hormonal irregularity.

Hormones can affect how you think. If you are filtering every decision through a wreck of emotions, you will not secure optimal results in your finances. And even the smallest decisions we make adds up to big expenses. I remember feeling so overwhelmed at the grocery store that I would load the cart up with random stuff and then come home, only to not have anything for dinner. Then I would complain to my hubby that our grocery budget was just not doable… The poor guy.

You can have every excuse in the world why you do what you do to not abide by a budget but the reality is that you just don’t feel well enough to do so. And that is why you can’t accomplish your goals. Everything is overwhelming. It feels like you are walking through quick sand just to get to the coffee pot. You are snapping at your kids for every puff of air they exhale, clenching your teeth just to keep some kind of self control. And on top of all the other demands motherhood requires of you, now you have to manage every purchase just to make a tight budget work? Yeah, okay, whatever!

But ladies, there is hope. Once you recognize that your hormones are the cause of your agony, you can do some things to help. And I promise, making meal plans, managing an envelope system and finding great deals won’t seem overwhelming anymore.

Here are a few points that may help…

  1. Pray. Pray for direction and the Lord will always guide you if you listen.
  2. Recognize the problem. Once I recognized that the culprit was my hormones and not because I’m an awful sinful person that was making me feel moody or mad, I made it a goal to correct it. I know this can be difficult especially if you don’t know what is going on with your body. For me, I did a substantial amount of research and found out that I was progesterone deficient. ( Progesterone deficiency is actually quite common when you hit your 30’s) I have been using a natural progesterone cream and feel a HUGE difference! ( I will share what supplements I take in a future post.)
  3. Plan ahead. I have learned that when I am on my period, I don’t have the motivation or energy I normally do and so I need to plan accordingly. We all have good days and bad days. Make the goods days as productive as possible. And give yourself a little grace on the bad days. If you know you are not going to feel like cooking, maybe make ahead some freezer meals for that time of month or crunch your grocery budget tighter so you will have extra funds to spend on easier meals.
  4. Talk to other women about what’s going on. Maybe your best friend or sister will have some insight on their own personal experience, a recommendation on a great supplement or health care professional.
  5. Clean up your diet. This one is a given to most of you that have been traveling this road for awhile but I can’t help but to mention it for the newbies. We put in crap, we feel like crap.
  6. Be real with your man. This is the most important point. You are in this debt-free journey together. Don’t sabotage it, even if it’s unintentional, just because you don’t want to be vulnerable with your spouse. There have been many times where I have told my hubby that I can not trust myself with our finances. I can’t have the debit/credit card, I can’t browse the stores just to look and I can’t be in charge of the bill paying. When I explained to my hubby what was going on, he was more than happy to help. (Must be that “fixer” that most men are or maybe I’m just one of those lucky ones who married a great guy.)

I pray that this helps some of you that are trying to so hard to follow a budget but are left wondering “What is wrong with me?!” I hear you sister and know what you are going through but I also know that it gets better.
